What data is backed up for Linear?

Written by ProBackup

his article lists the data types that ProBackup backs up for Linear and any known limitations.

ProBackup takes a snapshot of the Linear teams you select every 24 hours. Your backup is organized by team, just like in Linear. Archived issues, projects, milestones and documents are included. When an issue is deleted in Linear, it stays in your backup with all its earlier versions, so you can still view or restore it.

What we back up

Per team:

  • Issues

  • Comments

  • Attachments

  • Projects

  • Milestones

  • Documents

  • Labels

Workspace-wide:

  • Users

Issues

Title, description, status, priority, estimate, due date, assignee, labels, project, milestone, cycle name, parent issue, created by, and the created, updated, started, completed and canceled dates. Relations to other issues (blocks, blocked by, duplicate of, related to) are backed up too, so they can be re-linked when you restore.

Comments

All comments on issues, including replies. ProBackup stores the comment text, author, issue, reply-to comment, and the created, updated, edited and resolved dates.

Attachments

Everything in an issue's attachment section:

  • Uploaded files are downloaded and stored in your backup. You can download them from ProBackup.

  • Links (for example a GitHub pull request, a Slack message or a Figma file) are stored as links.

For each attachment ProBackup also stores the title, subtitle, issue, source, creator, and the created and updated dates.

Projects

Name, summary, overview, status, priority, lead, teams, start and target dates, progress, created by, and the created, updated, started, completed and canceled dates. A project shared by several teams appears once, under its first team. For a project shared by more than 20 teams, the first 20 teams are kept.

Milestones

Name, description, project, status, target date, progress, position, and the created and updated dates. Milestones appear under the same team as their project.

Documents

Documents on issues, projects and teams: title, full content, summary, project or issue, initiative, parent document, created by, last edited by, owner, and the created, updated and hidden dates.

Labels

Team labels and workspace labels, including label groups: name, description, color, scope (team or workspace), group and group type, parent group, created by, and the created, updated and retired dates. Workspace labels appear under every team.

Users

All workspace members, including deactivated users: name, display name, email, job title, whether they are active, an admin, the owner, a guest or an integration user, timezone, last seen and the date they joined.

What we don't back up

  • Cycles (the cycle name is kept on each issue)

  • Workflow settings (the status name is kept on each issue)

  • Initiatives, and documents that belong only to an initiative

  • Project updates and initiative updates, including their comments

  • Comments on documents

  • Customer requests

  • Views, templates, reactions and favorites

  • Issue history (the activity log). ProBackup keeps its own daily versions of each issue instead.

  • Workspace and team settings, integrations and automations

Known limitations

  • Images in text. Images inside a description, comment or document are kept as a link to Linear, not as a separate file. Files in an issue's attachment section are stored.

  • Which teams are backed up. ProBackup sees the teams that the Linear user who connected the backup can see. To include a private team, connect with a user who is a member of that team. You can include or exclude teams in your backup settings.

  • Deleted items. When an issue is deleted in Linear, ProBackup marks it as deleted in your backup. This check is skipped for teams with more than 10,000 issues: deleted issues of those teams keep looking active in your backup, but their data stays available. Deleted comments and attachments are not marked as deleted either.
