How to restore Slack data

Written by ProBackup

This article explains which data types ProBackup can restore for Slack and any known limitations.

Messages

When you restore a message, it is created as a new message at the bottom of the channel or direct message. The following data is included: message content with formatting, attachments, and threads (including all backed-up thread replies).

The restored message is posted by the ProBackup app, showing the original author's name and profile picture. Its timestamp is the time of the restore.

Note: Emoji reactions on messages will not be restored. System messages (such as "joined the channel") are not restored.

Channels

When you restore a channel, a new channel is created in the related workspace, named after the original with _restored_ and the restore date and time added (for example marketing_restored_2026-11-02_10-15-00). Public channels are restored as public channels and private channels as private channels. All messages, files, and threads are restored with it.

Note: For direct messages, restore individual messages instead of the whole conversation.

Files

Files cannot be restored on their own. They are restored together with the message they were shared in.
