How to test the restore process

Written by ProBackup

Testing the restore process helps you know exactly what to do when you accidentally lose or change data. This article explains a safe, risk-free way to test a restore in ProBackup.

Test the restore

  1. On the Home page, click "Go to..." for any app.

  2. Select a data type tab (e.g. tasks, comments, or files).

  3. Navigate to any project, list, or board in the left sidepane.

  4. Select one or more records and click "Restore...".

  5. Review and configure the restore options (see below), then confirm.

  6. Go to the "Restore report" to check that the restore is completed.

  7. Open your cloud app and search for the restored items.

  8. Compare them with the original items.

  9. Once reviewed and approved, delete the restored items so you keep only the original records.

Restore options

After you click "Restore...", a restore pane opens on the right. Review and configure these options before confirming:

  • Restore location: Shows where the record will be restored. This is set automatically based on the record's original location.

  • Snapshot date: The date of the backup version that will be restored. Use the date picker to restore the record as it existed on a different date.

  • Restore method: Choose how the data is restored.

    • Restore as new records (recommended for testing the restore): Creates new copies of the selected records in the original location. This is the safest option and does not affect any existing data.

    • Overwrite existing records: Updates existing records with the backed-up field values. Use this to roll back changes to a record that still exists in your app. When you select this option, a field picker appears so you can choose which fields to overwrite.

Tips

  • Type a keyword in the search field to quickly search the current table. This only searches the selected table, so make sure the drop-down fields are set correctly.

  • For some data types, you can select "Not active" in the search criteria to find items that have been deleted.

Notes:

  • When you restore a lot of data, it can take a while before everything is restored.

  • When you restore a board or project, a new board or project is added with "restore" and the date in its name.

  • For records, you can often sort by creation date to find the newly created items.
